Acne develops when the skin produces excess oil, known as sebum. Sebum plays an important role in maintaining skin hydration and protecting against certain bacteria, but when too much is produced, it can mix with dead skin cells and block pores. This buildup creates the environment where pimples and other acne lesions form.
When pores become clogged, bacteria can multiply within them, leading to inflammation, redness, and swelling. Many acne treatments are designed to reduce bacteria and calm inflammation, while others work by regulating oil production to help prevent future breakouts.
Although acne itself may improve over time, acne scars are more likely to be long-lasting. Scarring occurs when inflammation damages deeper layers of the skin. To help reduce the risk of acne scarring, it’s important to avoid picking at the skin or popping pimples during active breakouts. -
A number of factors can increase oil production in the skin, which may raise the risk of developing acne. Hormonal changes are a common contributor, which is why acne often appears during puberty. Hormone fluctuations during pregnancy can also trigger or worsen breakouts.
Other factors that may contribute to acne include:Stress
Diets high in refined carbohydrates
Certain medications, such as corticosteroids or testosterone
Underlying endocrine conditions
Heavy or oil-based skin care products
While some of these factors may not directly cause acne, they can make breakouts more difficult to control. Your dermatologist at Park City Dermatology can recommend skin care products and treatment options that help manage acne without worsening irritation.

Clearer skin is possible, even for individuals with persistent or severe acne. Advances in dermatology have led to a range of effective treatments that address excess oil production, inflammation, and the underlying causes of acne.
Park City Dermatology offers comprehensive acne management using current, evidence-based therapies. After evaluating your skin and reviewing your medical history, your dermatologist may recommend one or more of the following treatments:Laser therapy
Acne extractions and medical-grade facials
Intense pulsed light (IPL) treatments
Prescription medications, including Accutane® when appropriate
AviClear® laser treatment is an advanced option for acne management that typically involves a series of three short treatments. AviClear targets the sebaceous glands to reduce oil production, with continued improvement often seen for several months following the final session.
